Week 6: Compelling Comics

Saga Volume 1 by
Brian K Vaughan (writer)
& Fiona Staples (artist)

This week I chose to read the science fiction comic book, Saga, by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples.  I chose to read this comic for a similar reason as to why I chose to read March last week, because I do not read many comics.  The only comics that I have read are the Avatar: The Last Airbender comics via YouTube videos, and a physical copy of The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars. Another reason why I chose Saga was because I do enjoy reading science fiction, but unfortunately do not read enough of it.

Many would consider this series to be placed in an “adult” section as opposed to a “teen” section of a library.  The reason being that this series contains graphic violence and sexually explicit scenes.  However, there would certainly be older teens and young adults who would find this series appealing.  Some libraries might place it in the general adult collection, but teens would still be able to access it.  I would place it within the teen collection but in a sub-section specifically for older teens, sixteen and up.

Here’s a Read-Alike!

The Walking Dead: Days Gone Bye
by Robert Kirkman (writer)
& Tony Moore (artist)

Kirkman, R., & Moore, T. (2004). The walking dead. Vol. 1; Days Gone Bye. Berkeley, CA: Image Comics.

Using the NoveList Plus website (available through my public library’s database), I was able to find The Walking Dead: Days Gone Bye by Robert Kirman and Tony Moore as a read-alike to Saga. There is a shift in genre in this read-alike, from science fiction to horror, although some would argue that the idea of zombie virus does fall under science fiction.  Readers of Saga will enjoy the graphic violence that is seen in The Walking Dead.  The Walking Dead comics are also very popular given the TV series adaptation.
